The Farmer and COVID-19

As we are going through this COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of so many professions that sell or deliver us food have come to the forefront. I had taken this picture years ago somewhere in Delaware and it made me think that this is where it starts. The farmers and farm workers are so important to us  and  I am sure most of us take their plight for granted.

The Food Tank points out that “in 2019 U.S. farm bankruptcies hit an eight year high. (Source: https://foodtank.com/news/2020/03/remember-your-farmers-during-the-covid-19-crisis-well-need-them-the-next-time-around/)

Order Online from Your Local Farmer

And made a suggestion that I had not thought of: order online from your farmer. I am going to  explore that and if I find the produce that I want, I will update this post. Please see the comments of that article, Katy Anne (https://www.facebook.com/ksevs), has started to create a list of farms.

Food Security

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation President, Zippy Duvall, “We have been blessed with plenty when it comes to America’s food supply. Empty shelves can be frightening, but empty fields and barns would be devastating. Times like these should remind us all of the importance of ensuring our nation’s food security. While many retailers are scaling back and temporarily closing for public health, agriculture remains on call 24/7.” (Source: https://www.fb.org/land/impact-covid19-on-ag)

COVID-19 Resources for Farmers

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)  has created a list of financial programs  to help farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The USDA is also providing a list of resources for farmers and COVID-19.
